Bajrang Punia is one of the most promising freestyle wrestlers who won a Bronze for India in the recently held Tokyo Olympics 2020 after beating Kazakhstan’s Daulet Niyazbekov with a huge margin of 8-0. Bajrang competes in the 65 kg category and has also won 3 World Wrestling Championship titles and becoming the only Indian to do so.
Bajrang Punia’s Early Life
Bajrang Punia was Born on 26 Feb 1994 in Khudan, the Jhajjar district of Haryana, India in an ordinary family. Born to Balvan Singh and Om Pyari he was the youngest of the 3 siblings. His father was also a wrestler who wants his son to become a wrestler and motivates him to become a Wrestler. So at the young age of 7, he started wrestling and In 2008 he Joined chattarsal stadium where was trained by Ramphal Mann. Recently amid the coronavirus Pandemic on 25 Nov 2020 he was married to Sangita Phogat the well know Indian wrestler who competes in the 59 kg category.

Career Achievements
- The Journey starts from the 2013 Asian Wrestling Championship at that time Bajrang Punia fought under the 60kg category and settled for Bronze after losing to North Korea’s Hwang Ryong hak.
- In the same year 2013, World Wrestling Championship Punia won a Bronze in the 60kg category.
- The next year 2014 Bajrang under the 61kg category won a silver medal each in the Asian wrestling championship, Commonwealth games, and the Asian games and overall 3 silver medals in the year 2014.
- In the year 2017, he won a silver medal in the U-23 World championship.
- The same year 2017 he also won a gold in Asian Wrestling Championship.
- The same year Bajrang also won a gold medal in the Asian Wrestling Championship.
- The year 2018 turns out to be quite impressive for Punia as he won 4 medals under the 65kg category in the year,a Bronze in Asian Wrestling championship, silver in World Wrestling Championship and gold each in Asian and Commenwealth games.
- Won gold in the Asian Wrestling championship in the year 2019 and a Bronze in the World Wrestling championship 2019 and loses his world no 1 ranking after settling for Bronze(overall his third medal in the world wrestling championship) which made him qualify for the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
- At the Matteo Pellicone Ranking series held in Rome,Italy Bajrang Punia regained his World no-1 ranking after winning gold in the 65kg category by defeating Mongolia’s Tulga Tumur Ochir.
- Finally he won a Bronze in the Tokyo Olympics which held in 2021 due to Covid Pandemic by defeating Kazakhstan's wrestler with 8-0 margin.
Awards and Honor
- In the year 2015 India’s Star Wrestler Bajrang Punia was awarded the Arjuna award which is the second-highest sporting honor awarded by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
- Awarded with Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award in the year 2019 formerly known as rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award.
- In the same year 2019, he was awarded by Padma Shri the 4th highest civilian award given each year on the occasion of Republic Day.
- Punia was also promoted to the post of Gazetted officer OSD Sports in the Indian Railways by the Railway Ministry.
- FICCI India Sports Award 2020 which was awarded by FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry) for winning the Bronze at the Tokyo Olympics.
Current
India’s star wrestler Bajrang Punia currently preparing for the upcoming Commonwealth and Asian Games which will be held in the month of July and September. Currently, Punia is at World No-2 in the world wrestling Rankings he will also looking to regain the no-1 Spot in the 65kg category.
